Your Djembe Tutor

Mamady Keïta

Mamady Keïta (sometimes spelled Keita) is a renowned master of the djembe, a goblet-shaped hand drum central to West African music. He is the founder of the Tam Tam Mandingue drumming school and belongs to the Manding ethnic group.

Keïta grew up in Balandougou, a small village near Guinea’s border with Mali. His journey with the djembe began at the age of seven under the guidance of Karinkadjan Kondé, a master djembefola who introduced him to the instrument’s rich traditions. Immersed in the culture of his Malinke heritage, Keïta was schooled in the history and rhythms of his people. By twelve, he was recruited into Siguiri’s first regional ballet by Balanka Sidiki, a talent scout for the group.
